Square piano by Anonymous c.1785

We are pleased to offer for sale this delightful small square piano, made circa 1785. This bijou piano has a compass of 4 ½ octaves (C - f³) with a single action, overhead lever dampers and two hand stops operating the sustain and lute stop. The decorative case is in flame mahogany with purpleheart, mahogany & laburnum bandings and plain line & parquetry inlays, and sits a (replacement) french stand.

This piano was possibly made by Charles Trute, who was active as an instrument maker in London in the 1780s prior to his emigration to the United States, bearing strong similarities to other instruments by him, particularly the instrument at Vassar College.

This piano is tuned to a¹=415.

Overall height: 740mm ( 29¼″).

This instrument was recently restored by Andrew Lancaster, has been fully serviced in our workshops, and is available to play and inspect by appointment.
