Square Piano by Zumpe and Buntebart, London 1773
We are pleased to offer for sale this lovely early square piano by Johannes Zumpe and Gabriel Buntebart, made in London in 1773.
This square piano has a compass of 4 octaves & 10 notes (GG - f³) with a single action and overhead lever dampers, with three hand levers operating a split sustain and lute stop. The case is in mahogany with a simple black line inlay and brass strap hinges, and is supported by a trestle stand in mahogany. The nameboard bears an inlaid cartouche with the maker's inscription.
This piano comes with a nice provenance, having been part of the Boddington Pyne Collection, and is offered together with the original 1888 exhibition catalogue, N°1 signed by Henry Boddington and J. Kendrick Pyne.
The nameboard inscription reads: ′Johannes Zumpe et Buntebart Londini Fecerunt 1773 ⁄ Princes Street, Hanover Square′
Dimensions: 50½ × 19 × 6¾″ (1285 × 480 × 172mm) approx.
This instrument is tuned to a¹=415.
This instrument has been fully restored in our workshops and is available to play and inspect by appointment.
